The Science of Music and Memory: Why Learning an Instrument Makes You Smarter

Dear ,

Have you ever wondered why musicians seem to have an uncanny ability to remember things? Or why so many studies link learning an instrument to higher cognitive function? Science has shown time and time again that playing music isn’t just an enjoyable pastimeβ€”it actually makes you smarter.

When we learn to play an instrument, we engage multiple areas of the brain simultaneously. From memorizing notes and rhythms to coordinating hand movements, musicians activate neural pathways that strengthen cognitive skills. Research has found that children who study music tend to perform better in subjects like math and language, while adults who continue playing see benefits in memory retention and even a reduced risk of cognitive decline.

But here’s something truly mind-blowingβ€”musicians’ brains are actually physically different from those who don’t play music. Studies using MRI scans have found that musicians have a larger corpus callosumβ€”the bundle of nerves connecting the left and right hemispheres of the brain. This means that musicians’ brains communicate faster and more efficiently, allowing them to process information more quickly, multitask better, and even think more creatively than non-musicians. Essentially, learning an instrument doesn’t just train your brainβ€”it reshapes it in ways that last a lifetime!

And these benefits aren’t just for professional musiciansβ€”anyone, at any age, can reap the rewards. Studies show that playing an instrument improves focus, problem-solving skills, and emotional intelligence. It’s even been linked to better decision-making, as it strengthens the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for critical thinking and impulse control.

At Metro Music Makers, we see these benefits firsthand every day. Whether it’s a child mastering their first song, a teenager building confidence through performance, or an adult rediscovering their passion for music, we know that learning an instrument is a lifelong giftβ€”not just for the joy it brings, but for the scientifically proven superpowers it gives your brain.

So if you or someone you know has ever thought, β€œI wish I had learned an instrument,” there’s no better time than now to start. Your brain will literally rewire itself to become sharper, stronger, and more resilient. Now, that’s music to our ears.

Keep learning, keep growing, and let the music lead the way,
Allison Jarrell 🎡
Founder and CEO

Congratulations to our February Student of the Month!

Congratulations to Kate Grundhoefer, our February MMM Student of the Month! Kate takes piano lessons from our Founder and CEO, Allison Jarrell.

Kate has been taking piano from Metro Music Makers for two years, but the 10-year-old student has been learning from her dad, MMM instructor Mark Grundhoefer, since she was five years old.

Kate's dad plays several different instruments, but she had a specific reason for wanting to learn piano. "I like how the piano has a wide range of notes and sounds, and I chose it because I like classical music and wanted to learn how to play it," Kate shares.

There aren't many kids who can say this, but Kate shares that her favorite artist is her dad. She also likes a lot of other music, such as Tears for Fears, Taylor Swift, and instrumental soundtracks.

Her love for music goes beyond just listening though. "I love how people really love to create music, including me!" Kate says. "We do it because we love it, and it makes us happy."

Kae also likes to dance (ballet and jazz), read, climb trees, make crafty art projects, and roller skate! "I am part of a dance company, and we do several performances and recitals in the fall and the spring. I also participate in clubs at school, and I’m trying ultimate frisbee and the Girl Scouts for the first time this year!"

One amazing fact about Kate is that she has a song on Spotify that has 42,000 streams on Spotifyβ€”and counting. Check out her song "Flying," a piece arranged by Allison Jarrell.

Kate has two Miniature Australian Shepherds, Leela and Indie. She is also a philanthropist: "I care deeply about animals and our earth, and I have raised money to help support different nonprofit organizations," she shares.

Kate invited Allison to be her special guest at her school's recent Grandparents & Special Friends Day.

Kates' Faves:

Movie: Christmas movies and The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Favorite Food: The pesto pasta dish from MadLife

Favorite Candy: Anything chocolate!
Favorite School Subject: Music
Future Plans: A dance instructor and a musician

Congratulations, Kate! Keep making music!
