Recently, through our partnership with Jewish Family & Career Services of Atlanta (JF&CS), one of our music therapists, Macy Ellis, facilitated a session that left everyone involved deeply moved. With client confidentiality protected, we are honored to share a reflection that captures the heart of what happened.
We received the following feedback from a family member and volunteer involved in the session:
The visit “brought such incredible joy.”
“Imagine a coffee house… a one-on-one concert. It was beautiful to see him light up. He was so happy, he started singing songs he didn’t even realize he knew the words to. It conjured authentic conversation about music and songs he hadn’t heard in a long time… stories about meeting Stevie Nicks and Ray Charles.”
One of the most powerful observations shared was this: he is usually fixated on his glucose monitor every 45 seconds. During the session, he didn’t look at it once. He was completely locked in.
It prompted questions about how to continue introducing music into his life and how to experience more live music moments together.
Reading this brought tears to our eyes.
Because this is what music therapy can do.
It can unlock memory.
It can regulate attention.
It can spark authentic conversation.
It can create space for joy.
At Metro Music Makers, our theme this year is connection through music, and this session embodied that mission beautifully. Music therapy is not simply about playing songs. It is about strengthening relationships, increasing engagement, and creating meaningful human experiences.
We are incredibly proud of Macy Ellis and grateful for the trust that JF&CS places in our team. If you would like to learn more about her work, you can read her full bio on our website.
