Supporting Caregivers with Music and Connection

Metro Music Makers Joins Caregiver Grant Program to Harness the Power of Music

Dear ,

I’m thrilled to share that our music therapy department has been invited to take part in a special grant program awarded to Jewish Family & Career Services (JF&CS) of Atlanta. This program is designed to support caregivers of individuals living with dementia and memory disorders, and music plays a key role in helping volunteers connect with those they serve.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of training the grant program volunteers on ways they can use music to build those connections, along with some important considerations when working with this population. As I prepared for the training, I was reminded once again just how powerful music really is for brain health.

Unlike most activities, music engages the entire brain at once. It lights up multiple regions during both listening and participation, which makes musical memories especially resilient, even in the later stages of memory loss. Music also stimulates neural pathways that might otherwise go unused, keeping the brain active in ways that are incredibly meaningful for individuals living with dementia.

But here is the exciting part: these benefits are not just for those with memory disorders. Continued engagement with music is important for all of us. Whether it is listening to your favorite playlist, moving your body to a rhythm, singing along, or making music yourself, these activities help keep our brains sharp, flexible, and connected. Regular engagement with music supports focus, reduces stress, and may even help protect against age-related decline.

That is why making music a regular part of our daily lives matters so much. While music cannot reverse cognitive changes, it can strengthen and preserve the abilities we already have, offering moments of clarity, connection, and joy at every stage of life. This is why we are so passionate about the work we do at Metro Music Makers, bringing the power of music into people’s lives in meaningful ways.

Keep learning, keep growing, and let the music lead the way.
