Helping Your Child Feel Confident on Stage

Dear ,

One of the biggest challenges we see with students isn’t learning the music, it’s performing it.

A student can play something beautifully in a lesson, and then the moment they’re in front of others, everything changes. They rush. They freeze. They lose confidence.

If you’ve ever seen that happen, you’re not alone.

At Metro Music Makers, we encourage all of our students to participate in performances like our upcoming showcase. Not because they have to be perfect, but because performing is an important part of becoming a well-rounded musician.

It’s where students build confidence, learn to navigate nerves, and experience the joy of sharing their music with others.

As we prepare for the showcase, we’ve been focusing on a simple but powerful tool called mental rehearsal, or visualization.

This is a technique athletes have used for years to prepare for competition, and it’s just as powerful for music performance.

It’s exactly what it sounds like. Before playing, students take a moment to β€œrun the performance” in their mind. They picture their hands, hear the music, and imagine themselves playing with confidence.

There’s actually science behind this. When we vividly imagine a performance, the brain activates many of the same pathways as when we physically do it. In other words, the brain begins to treat it like real experience.

That means when students walk into a performance, it doesn’t feel completely new. It feels familiar.

And that changes everything.

The best part is how simple this can be, and it’s something you can easily try at home.

Before your child plays, you might say:
β€œClose your eyes for a moment. Imagine yourself playing it the way you want it to sound.”

Then have them play.

It takes just a few seconds, but it can help shift their mindset from nervous to prepared.

As we head into showcase season, this is a great way to support your child not just in practicing their music, but in feeling confident sharing it.

If you’d like to learn more about how this works and why it’s so effective, we’ve shared more in our latest blog post.

What Parents Are Saying...

"It’s going well with Stephen. He has taught Rhett a little bit in a different way, which is fun and new for Rhett (like teaching chords to rock/pop songs). Rhett has had fun with that."
