From the road this weekβ¦
This week, Iβm packing my bags and heading to the SER-AMTA Music Therapy Conference, where a few members of our team will be joining therapists from across the Southeast to learn, share ideas, and bring back inspiration for the work we do every day.
Itβs one of my favorite professional gatherings of the year because the conversations are always so closely connected to what we see in our own sessions. The small breakthroughs. The laughter. The moments when music reaches someone in a way words simply canβt.
Many of the sessions focus on the same populations we work with in our clinical space and in the community. Young children who are developing communication and social skills. Teens and adults navigating mental health challenges. Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) who are building confidence and connection. Older adults in memory care who light up when a familiar song brings back a memory from decades ago.
Being surrounded by other therapists who understand those moments is incredibly meaningful, and I always come home with new ideas, activities, and songs we can use right away with the wonderful clients we serve.
On a personal note, the timing of the conference is a little funny this year. I am technically leaving my brand-new husband for a week already, but for a very good reason. My mom was supposed to be on a girls' trip this week that unfortunately fell through, so she is coming along with me. Between conference sessions, we will get some unexpected mother-daughter time together, which feels like a pretty special silver lining.
Iβm also excited that Iβll get to spend time with Kristen Van Dyke, who manages our Charlotte location. Any chance to connect with our team in person and talk about the future of our programs is something I always treasure.
Weβre looking forward to bringing back new ideas, new songs, and new activities that we can put to work right away in sessions.
Keep learning, keep growing, and let the music lead the way.
