The Soul in the Sound

Dear ,

Every once in a while, one of our team members writes something that makes me stop, reread, and think a little deeper about the work we do. This week, that writer is Mark Grundhoefer, our rock band director, longtime teacher, and talented songwriter.

In his new article, AI and Music: Where to Draw the Line, Mark reflects on the tension between old-school musicianship and today’s rapidly advancing technology. His words bring me back to the heart of why music matters so much: the hesitation before a note finally lands just right, a voice breaking with emotion, the give and take between players in a live room. Those are the things that make music human.

At Metro Music Makers, we’ve always embraced tools that help our students grow and our teachers create. But as Mark reminds us, the real magic happens when a person pours their heart into a note, a lyric, or a rhythm. That’s the part no machine can replicate.

I encourage you to read Mark’s article below and join us in considering the question: How do we use technology responsibly in music while keeping the soul of the craft alive?

Keep learning, keep growing, and let the music lead the way.

We learned to write songs, arrange parts, and rehearse until the timing was locked in. Every take was a gamble, and every good one felt like a little miracle.

Fast forward a couple of decades, and we’re in a completely different world. Now we have software that can generate a β€œnew” song in seconds. We have programs that can separate stems from a stereo track, clean up noisy recordings, and even β€œmaster” your mix instantly. Some of this stuff is genuinely amazing. Some of it…
